Night School 41: Evaluation, Repair and Strengthening of Existing Structural Steel Buildings
This new Night School course provides a comprehensive overview of evaluation, repair, and strengthening of existing steel structures. The course tackles the unique challenges of existing-building projects including condition assessment, identifying material properties, testing, and determining appropriate retrofit solutions. The course begins with an introduction to existing buildings including how they are different from “modern” buildings. The course explores the history of existing steel buildings and provides an overview of AISC 360, Appendix 5: Evaluation of Existing Structures. The course then dives into key principles and practical considerations for evaluating material deterioration and damage before taking a closer look at the nuances of structural strengthening. The second half of the course will emphasize seismic assessment in accordance with AISC 342: Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings with focused sessions on moment frames, braced frames, and diaphragms and collectors. Case studies and examples will be presented throughout the course to illustrate concepts presented.
